On Sunday the newest episode of Top Gear aired on BBC.

Sadly the new season started not that great. Of course the production quality is great as well as the content, featuring a test of the Bentley Continental Supersports, a trip to the volcano of Iceland and a lot of “stars” in the reasonably priced car. But overall the episode was a bit boring. Nevertheless I’m looking forward to see the next one on Sunday the 4th of July.

Avatar, takes place in 2154 where the people have finally made it. The resources of the world came to an end and now the humans have to look for other planets. The world the people are trying to rob is called Pandora which has its own natives – the Na’Vi. To learn more about their habits and build up a diplomatic relationship there is the avatar program where humans can completely control a lifeless puppet which is created from a mixture of human and Na’Vi DNA. As a second goal they try to find the resource called Unobtainium, sadly the main source is located underneath the village of the natives.

The main character Jake who is one of the few who are allowed to control one of the avatars, is just a replacement for his brother. Who was trained for that task about 5 years and than got killed in a gang-shooting on the earth.
Jake, who is partly disabled and not able to walk is more than impressed after his firsts steps in the avatar body. On their first expedition he is attacked by some of the creatures of Pandora and gets devided from the others. Alone in the woods of Pandora he is rescued by the beautiful Na’Vi girl Neytiri. She sees something in Jake that’s why she brings him to the little village of her tribe. At first the rest of the Na’Vi population is not very pleased with that but as the story evolves Jake earns more and more respect from the other Na’Vi soldiers.
As there would be no story, there is of course a bad thing about this, the head of military department has completely other plans than a friendly solution to get the natural resources which are located under the village. Colonel Miles Quaritch tells Jake to provide him with every detail he can get about the military issues the village has. Not so hard to predict what happens next, huh? Right, it isn’t. The story is very predictable but at the same time there are no real flaws. You will not sit in the movie and think “What, how will you explain that?” or “How is this is going to happen?” – solid. If you have just a little love for those kind of stories, you’ll going to love this flick.

Ok, let’s come to the biggest plus point for the movie. The visuals. Man, that movie is gorgeous. And it’s not just that the woods of Pandora are created with such an good eye for details and such creativity. No, everything fits, even the human base is designed with a very good feeling for the complete thing. The film isn’t playing with stupid eye catchers which are dancing a few centimeters in front of your face. It’s more that every scene is perfectly put together for a perfect 3D feeling. Even the subtitles are given a nice 3D effect. ‘Nough said, the visuals are awesome.

Of course the movie has some weaknesses for example that the Na’Vi are bit too human in my eyes and that the characters are very stereotype based, especially the colonel. The story reminds me a bit of “The Last Samurai”. A simple, good guy with his own problems solves them by saving the world. I’m really sitting here and cannot think of a real flaw, a really bad mistake else than those I wrote down. The movie was just great entertainment, I never felled bored, the whole 3D thing didn’t give me headache as in other movies before and after the credits rolled through the screen I wanted to be a Na’Vi at least for a few days.

Go to a cinema next to you and watch this is 3D, now!

As a daily internet user it’s no big surprise that I came across the promotional videos about the new, shiny, to be released in the third quarter of 2010 Google operating system – ChromeOS.

And I don’t know if it is just me but I don’t believe that there are that much people who are just using there netbooks to surf the internet and not more. Before buying the MacBook I’m writing on right now, I was using a MSI Wind U100. I played around with a lot of OSs. Windows, OSX and finally I tried some of the already released “netbook OSs” – JoliCloud and Moblin. Not exactly the same like what Google is aiming at with their operating system but the idea is the same. Put everything in the big cloud. Yeah, cloud computing one of the biggest buzzword this year. And of course this not a bad idea. I mean, just watch the UI Demo Video for Chromium, your system will boot in less than 5 seconds, you will just have to enter your Google account login credentials and bam, there it is, all you need online. Reachable from everywhere. Don’t get me wrong, I really like this idea even if I have to give Google more and more information about myself again and again. But as I said, I played around with JoliCloud and Moblin, and of course it’s pretty simple. Add web applications and use them. Disregarding some beta issues those both systems are great when it comes to surfing, chat and watching youtube videos. But both systems also have a lot of problems when it comes to daily actions I was doing on my netbook.

Local data management. Moblin and JoliCloud are a pain in the a** when it comes to find and use files on your local disk. The digicam and usb stick examples in the Google presentation are not looking much better. Guys, I don’t want to put EVERYTHING on your drives. And how will a web browser help me copy and paste files which are stored locally.
I hope this is one of the things which will be thought over till the final version is going to be released.

Home network. Okay the idea is, no files stored on my local hard drive. So maybe, but just maybe I feel the need to open, edit or what ever I want to do with files which are stored on my local network. Of course with some linux knowledge it’s no problem to use samba to get a connection to my windows shares. But this is so far away from the simplicity these systems are looking for. This left completely unmentioned in the UI demo I’m not expecting a idea from Google on that aspect.

File playback. What happens when I’m trying to open a video which is using a codec, not implemented in the Chromium kernel? On the other two systems I had problems installing alternative players to view my video material. And when I got everything right there will be no way to install additional software on ChromeOS. Everything is integrated in the kernel, but what if it is not?

No internet? What happens when I’m not able to establish a internet connection? Ok there is Google Gears, so maybe you’ll be able to view the files which are cached on you local disk. Again this one left completely unmentioned in the UI demo. Let’s see.

Beside these three or four points I’m looking forward to play around with ChromeOS and maybe it will be the perfect system for people like my little sister who are not doing much more than surfing, checking mails and chatting with friends. But as its looks at the moment it’s not going to be a operating system for me.

Scrubs is back and the old cast is still part of the show. I just watched the first three episodes and it is still funny as hell. There is a new hospital including a campus, J.D. and Turk are working as teachers now, Dr. Cox is the same narcissistic, choleric big head and of course there are a lot of new characters. Sadly, it seems that Carla and Elliot or not longer part of the series.

I don’t want to tell too much. Find out for yourself. For those like me, who are not living in the US there are a lot of sources to find the episodes. The big wild torrent network – just to name one.

That’s some kind of a good question. I’m not sure. I started this blog when I was in London for a apprenticeship to keep my former employer informed about what I was doing over there. As you can see – not that much updates, so let’s say I fucked up as a blogger.

Not anymore, everything is going to change – at least this is what I hope.

In the future I’ll try to fill this blog with things which cross my mind. So you can expect articles about life experiences, some movie, music and pc-game reviews as well as picture updates.

But to be honest I have no idea where I’m heading to with this blog. All I know is that I will definitly use this page instead of just letting it lay around.

Little side note: I’m going to keep this weblog English only to train my English skills. So constructive criticism is very welcome.
